5. There's an unusual nude self-portrait of you with a bloody nose floating around the Internet. What's up with that?

MADM: I forgot that was out there. I've been taking photographs since I was 13 or 14, documenting me and my environments. I've had chronic nosebleeds since I was a young girl, and it was a traumatic thing. I'd be on the school bus and have red blood gushing all over me. I had one the other day. I took that photo a few years ago. I thought, instead of nursing this nosebleed, I'm going to lie in the bathtub and let this blood run all over me and take a photograph of it, because it's fucking ridiculous!

6. You have a boyfriend now, but over the last decade of touring were you inclined toward crazy sexual misadventures, or were you hanging out in the back of the bus reading a book?

MADM: I'm a people person. I'd be out and about at the bars for sure. All my years in Hole I was single. That was a time of learning who you are, what you like, what you can have, what you can't have, and exploration, definitely. I was not sitting in the bus eating apples.

7. Any memorable episodes?

MADM: All of them are very personal. There's the obvious boring stereotype that in a guy band the girl groupies are supposed to offer the guys blow jobs, and it's this boring routine that's been done over and over. But Hole was kind of unique, being a female-dominant band. What's cool about being in the opposite situation is that there is no routine. There is no stereotype about what a guy is supposed to offer a girl in a band. There were very silly, almost sexually confused moments. Once, a girlfriend asked, "Could you please kiss my boyfriend?" Mmmm. No. Thank you. That doesn't excite me. People tried to offer but they didn't know what angle to try.

8. Did anyone ever lure you into a threesome?

MADM: Nope. I am a one-on-one type. It's so different for a guy. I like the earthly desires, but I really like the mind and soul of an individual. That doesn't mean I need to be their girlfriend, but it definitely means getting into an actual intimate thing versus just "suck on my blah."

9. Can rocking out be better than sex?

MADM: It's on equal terms. My relationship with my bass in the most exciting moments of rocking out is equal to the peak of any sexual adventure. It's even better because you're sharing it with a million people.

10. Genital piercing, yes or no?

MADM: No. Not for me, not for others.

11. Would you ever consider posing for Playboy?

MADM: [Pause] I just considered it. No. What's interesting, though, is my mother was a Playboy Bunny at the height of when it was a prestigious thing to do. One of the first Playboy Clubs was in Montreal. My mother put herself through university by working as a Bunny. We have this amazing photo of her in her Playboy outfit. She's still got her green satin Bunny ears. That was probably what allowed me to go to art school and take that nude photograph of myself in the bathtub -- I grew up in a house with an independent, freewheeling mother who had all kinds of incredible art photographers take her photo. In her house, there are still all these nude photos of my mother hanging off of cliffs. I grew up with these gorgeous nude photographs of my gorgeous mother. There's an element of open sensuality in my life. I have an amazing collection of late '60s and early '70s Playboys. To me, those are gorgeous and beautiful. I use them as references for photo shoots. There needs to be a revival of romantic sensuality, and then I would consider posing.

12. Is Courtney a good kisser?

MADM: Never kissed her. Never. No way. You play in a band together, the last thing you want to do is be that close. Playing music together is like making out and having sex every day. No thank you to kissing. Not even holding hands. Once you cross that line of playing music together, don't touch me. [Laughs]
