A Mission District club operated by two former Deadheads, 12 Galaxies may sound like some throwback dive stuck in a Haight-Ashbury time machine. The truth is a lot stranger. Named after one of the unorthodox theories of local eccentric and street legend Frank Chu -- who can be found downtown protesting with a picket sign or hanging out at the club -- the hip two-level venue offers an intimate setting, a great second-story mezzanine with excellent sightlines and a varied lineup. Fractured folk and roots groups, such as Vetiver, perform often, and the occasional metal band blows out the club's speaker stacks. The weekly Ask Dr. Hal Show is a must-see. During this "interactive intellectual salon," the audience shouts out random, sometimes raunchy queries to the self-proclaimed oracle. Where else can you get answers to eternal questions like, "Could Jesus make a burrito so hot it would burn his tongue if he bit it?"
