Underground rock clubs in New York are as prolific as the overhyped New York bands that perform in them. But among all the converted loft spaces and under-the-radar bars jostling to book the next big thing, few can match the ambition of Lower East Side mecca Cake Shop. Hidden behind a tiny storefront, the space appears innocent at first, just a slightly unorthodox mash-up of a veggie-friendly café and an impeccably stocked record store. Just wait until you see a band rock out in the miniscule 74-person performance space in the basement, an intimate setting tailor-made for devoted fans. The lineups veer toward experimental and artsy, like the recent Melted Mailbox psychedelic showcase, but some heavy hitters have squeezed onto the small stage, like the spazzed-out punks from Les Savy Fav. Bigger acts, like Swedish singer-songwriter Jens Lekman, also occasionally spin special after-show DJ sets. If that isn't enough, the Shop recently got its liquor license, so you can get more than a caffeine buzz at the next show.

Famous Alumni: Chromeo, Boris, The Dwarves
Bands to See Now: Matt & Kim, Cause Co-Motion
