Doug Fir Lounge
830 E. Burnside Street, Portland, Oregon

A two-year-old subterranean lounge connected to the Jupiter, a posh boutique hotel in Portland's rapidly developing East Side, the Doug Fir could have become the kind of dandy club that pushes overpriced cocktails and boring background music. But a progressive booking policy has turned this architectural marvel -- a high-tech take on a hunting lodge often referred to as "the Northwest meets the Jetsons" -- into an upscale haven for live music. Many of the Northwest's biggest bands, like the Decemberists, have played the retro-inspired club, as well as trippy Japanese collective Acid Mothers Temple and New York noisemakers Black Dice. Anything goes musically, which explains why the swank club draws such an eclectic crowd, from music scenesters to business travelers staying at the hotel.

Famous Alumni: Viva Voce, The Thermals, The Helio Sequence
Bands to See Now: Menomena, Talkdemonic
