Nothing is as sexy as competence, and the Mercury Lounge is just about the most competent venue running. A 250-capacity brick-walled club with an excellent sound system, a rustic and dimly lit wooden bar, eagle-eye views of the stage from the floor and shockingly clean bathrooms, this place scores points before sound check even starts. And the expertise carries over to the talent, a near-impeccable selection of highly touted indie bands and the latest imports from across the pond. Tight scheduling usually means four or even five bands are crammed together in one night, but at least a few of them are worth the effort to score a ticket. So many buzzed-about U.K. bands have played some of their first U.S. dates here, including the Editors and the Arctic Monkeys, that the Mercury Lounge might as well process passports and have some customs agents on staff just to save time.

Famous Alumni: Interpol, The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Bands to See Now: Earl Greyhound, Beirut
