There's no better way to soak up the sun and a fruity fresh cocktail or four than atop a boat. Who cares if it's actually not in the water? Castaways on Chicago's famed North Avenue Beach looks like a boat run aground. Because the weather is wonderful only a scant three months a year, it's always packed. Bottoms are definitely up on the top deck, where bikini-clad babes soak up the sun and the stares (we suggest sunglasses for discretion). Consumption commences early and continues into the wee hours, so plan to party the whole day (and night) long. Hit this venerable establishment on Friday nights for Sunset Jams, a concert series boasting cover bands sounding off on the roof. Soothing tunes also make sunning more satisfactory on Saturdays and Sundays, from noon to six, when area musicians play for the beach crowd. As for Castaways fare, it's nothing special, just simple food like salads, wraps, sandwiches and quesadillas. Frozen cocktails and Corona-in-a-can play big on the drinks menu, since bottles aren't allowed on the beach; but don't let that last fact stop you from having fun. Indeed, some fans of this sunspot say that hanging at Castaways is like celebrating spring break all over again. From what we remember of spring break, we'd have to agree.
