"I like black on black on black. It's a look that says 'Screw you.'"
You may know Eddie Izzard as Roman Nagel from the two most recent Ocean's movies or as Wayne Malloy from the FX series The Riches. He's also a genius stand-up comedian famous for performing in ladies' clothing (see his Emmy-winning HBO special Dress to Kill). He's currently halfway through Stripped, a 30-city stand-up tour.
PLAYBOY: You're a man of many looks, to put it mildly. Do you have an overarching fashion rule?
IZZARD: If you wear your clothes with an attitude, one that comes naturally and isn't adopted, you can wear almost anything. Live it and own it.
PLAYBOY: Where do you buy your suits?
IZZARD: Savile Row in London. I used to have problems with suits. I went to boarding schools where you were forced to wear a suit, and they had a certain meaning. But through wearing Italian suits on Ocean's Twelve and then buying some, I got back into them. A combination of Italian tailoring and British design works for me.
PLAYBOY: Do you have a favorite designer?
IZZARD: I like Paul Smith. I recently got a trench coat of his that's fantastic. It's really light material, so I can wear it in L.A.
PLAYBOY: How do you dress for a night on the town?
IZZARD: What they call California black tie works well -- black shirt, black tie with black tux or jacket. I like black on black on black. It's a dark look that kind of says "Screw you." I don't like being in the herd.
PLAYBOY: Do you drive a screw-you car?
IZZARD: I drive a metallic-blue convertible VW Beetle. It's quite fast, and it's got the nostalgia thing going on -- very nippy, not too big. I keep looking at big flashy sports cars, and I think, I could get one of those. But I love this Beetle. My dad drove one.
PLAYBOY: Let's not drive. What are you drinking?
IZZARD: Glenrothes single malt. It's kind of sweet. I have a very childish sweet tooth, which I have to fight against. Some whiskeys grab you by the neck and then walk down your throat. This one goes like Alice down the rabbit hole. Just glides down. |
