"If we are to benefit from our natural resources, we must be willing to act to preserve them," Orvis's mission statement declares. This is a company whose relationship with the land is reciprocal. Orvis monitors its footprint and seeks to make it as inconspicuous as possible. Every year Orvis donates five percent of pre-tax profits to organizations that protect fishing habitats. In the past decade alone Orvis has contributed nearly 10 million dollars to groups like Trout Unlimited, The Nature Conservancy, Coastal Conservation Association, The Conservation Fund, Ruffed Grouse Society and The North Atlantic Salmon Fund. Without the crystal streams and thick forests, Orvis becomes a ship without an ocean.
