More Muscle, Less Money

Chevrolet
1958 Delray

1958 Delray Chevys are favorites with the muscle car crowd, so you have to pick between the lines to get a good deal. Bel Airs and Biscaynes will cost you plenty, especially if they're equipped with factory performance options. On the other hand, a 1958 Chevrolet Delray gets you into a pretty plain Jane package, but there's money to be saved here, and performance is the same and often better than heavier, gussied-up models. A two-door Delray sedan with a 348/315 V-8 is $28K. Station wagons are a good bet here, as well. If you edge into the '60s, Impala SS's with the vaunted 409-V-8, or plainer Bel Air hardtops with big motors, can double that cost really quickly. Four-doors are less desirable, and nearly as quick, so they're a better deal. Small-block or big-block, Chevys from this era are killer rides. Famed chief engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov was up to his ears at Corvette in this era, designing all kinds of performance equipment, much of which found its way into the passenger car line.
