Early-1960s Pontiac Catalinas or Bonnevilles (who needs a GTO?) are big, sleek, wide-trackers with thin A-pillars, lots of greenhouse glass and chrome side-spears with ribbed bands that accentuated the car's dramatic length. A handsome '62 Catalina coupe with a 389/348 Tri-Power V-8 is $41,200. Factory air was considered unnecessary, so don't worry if it's deleted, along with a radio; serious racers wanted to save as much weight as possible. Some Bonnevilles had posh, woven Morrokide upholstery. A few were ordered with optional leather interiors. If you don't mind cloth, and a bare-bones appearance, with their cool minimalist styling, these big Cats are very affordable. Pontiacs were considered performance cars back in the day. Even before the GTO, they were fast freight. |
