The Taste

Cocktail purists laugh, or cringe, at the idea of a ready-to-serve drink in a bottle. The concept renders the bartender obsolete and pretty much dismisses the importance of fresh ingredients. Sometimes, however, that is exactly what you want -- especially if you're heading to the beach, taking a hike or a long trip, or stocking the liquor cabinet in your cozy cabin miles away from civilization. Jose Cuervo's Golden Margarita is ideal for those who like the classic summer tequila-lime concoction but can't get to a proper bar -- or who value convenience above all else.

According to the company, this is the world's first super-premium pre-made margarita; it contains Jose Cuervo Gold tequila (a.k.a. Cuervo Especial) and Grand Marnier cognac-orange liqueur. The tequila is made from a mix of blue agave and reposado tequilas. The booze has a cloudy lemon-lime, yellow-green hue -- caramel color is added -- a distinct citrus smell and a smooth tequila-orange flavor that barely registers any alcohol, despite the fact that it's a 25-proof double-spirited cocktail. The Grand Marnier's sweet orange flavors overwhelm the lime, making this very drinkable indeed, but not ideal for people who like tartness or balance in their drinks.

Ideally, you'd serve it with a salted rim and a lime-wedge garnish, but all it really needs is ice. That, and maybe some salsa and chips.
