Shango Rum Liqueur is made from Trinidadian sugar cane, natural flavors and two crucial ingredients: damiana and guarana. Red Bull fans know guarana -- often accompanied by caffeine and taurine -- as nature's speed. Damiana is less common, but has long been used to treat a host of maladies, including depression, anxiety, bed-wetting, gastric ulcers and constipation.
Both guarana and taurine -- and alcohol actually -- are also believed to be aphrodisiacs. So Shango -- which comes in a bright red bottle sporting what looks like an African coat of arms -- is basically Trinidadian love potion. The spirit itself pours perfectly clear. It's light, sweet rum, with no discernible unusual characteristics, no earthy undertones or funky aftertastes.
For best results, go the rum and Coke route. Sure, you could add mint and lime to make a mojito, but Coke is fast, simple and adds caffeine to the equation. And with Trinidadian love potion, you may need to be up all night.
