If ever there were such a thing as a hipster wine, Green Point would be it. This is a winery that sponsors film festivals and concerts—Sonic Youth, Wilco—in Brooklyn's trendiest neighborhood: Greenpoint/Williamsburg. It has a Facebook page. And it adheres to politically correct, sustainable, environmental policies: water conservation, recycling and reforestation programs.
The company name actually refers to an especially lush patch of land in Victoria, Australia established by Moët & Chandon in 1986. But the owners feel a kinship to the similarly named New York region.
Though they make a rosé and a chardonnay, the company's reds are the better bets. Both the shiraz and the cabernet-shiraz blend show a lot more personality than screwcap-topped bottles might suggest. They are inky purple in color, with hints of oak in the bouquet. The shiraz combines cherry and plum flavors—some tartness at first—with spicy/peppery tannins. The rounder, fuller, smoother cab-shiraz blend adds notes of juicy blackcurrant and chocolate on the finish. Bring a bottle to your next loft party and you'll make friends with all the skinny jeans kids.
