With a brand-new shell and chassis, Volkswagen re-invents the Passat in style and performance. The all-new shell is a sharp departure from the previous generation's round symmetries. The 2006 version is a more aggressive and sophisticated car, with striking similarities to its big brother, the VW Phaeton. The new design is fresh and elegant, as it should be, with a price tag that can reach near 40 grand.
VW does an admirable job with its entry into the upscale sedan competition, especially with the Passat's redesigned cabin. American automakers would benefit from studying the Passatís cabin. The VW interior appeals to all the senses, with top-flight materials and ergonomic design. Every button and knob falls right where you would expect it and blends together perfectly. Built-in umbrella holders in the front door, a push-button parking brake and an air-conditioned glove box reveal VW's Rainman-like attention to detail. The leather bucket seats are firm and supportive for either spirited driving or the cross-country haul.
The 3.6-liter, 24-valve V-6 flat-out delivers the goods. Torque-y, with smooth power delivery, the Passat jumps when you drop the hammer. The 5.9-second sprint to 60 mph and 101-mph quarter-mile times would be impressive for most two-door cars. Ride quality could be better -- an adjustable suspension option would be nice -- but otherwise, the Passat handles day-to-day driving with nary a complaint. With the '06 Passat, VW takes a swing at the big boys. This time, they darn near hit it out of the park.
Four doors will re-assure her that you're a family man, but the 5.9-second burst to 60 mph reminds her of your inner wild child.
