When one reaches the age of ninety-one, nine years short of a century, every birthday feels momentous. Still, this year, with the founder of this publication — nay, media empire — racking up nine decades plus 365 days, is particularly special. Firstly, it marks the first year that Cooper, his youngest son and a passionate, fierce advocate of the brand in toto, has taken up his father’s mantle as Chief Creative Officer – a title that didn’t exist in Hef’s day, but if it did, Hef certainly would have had it. Also, it coincidentally (and unintentionally, may we add) arrives alongside the Amazon show, American Playboy. (Hef couldn’t let the “prestige TV” space alone; he clearly had to try it out for himself.)
To celebrate such an occasion, Playboy hand-picked some notables to wish our progenitor a happy birthday. In truth, if we had asked all of the household names whose lives he touched to send him a message, this video would be a 24-hour affair. So, instead, we asked a select few whose relationship means the world to Hugh Hefner, who didn’t just have a connection to him but also left indelible marks on the Playboy brand as well.
Happy birthday, Hef. We know you’ll have a good one, as you do. But we are thinking of you, and the way you changed our world.
