Deap Vally sounds like nothing you’ve ever heard before, yet, at the same time, like a hundred different rock bands all blended into two badass women. With just a guitar and drum kit, their visual presence immediately makes you think White Stripes, but their style screams Bowie, and finally you’re blindsided with their completely original sound… and you’re left feeling like you’ve watched a band that’s been around since the inception of rock and roll.
On a rainy Thursday afternoon, we headed down to Venice Beach, California where we hoped to film Lindsey Troy (guitar, vocals) and Julie Edwards (drums and vocals) rocking out on the iconic Venice Beach boardwalk during a break in the rain. Instead of calling off the shoot, Lindsey and Julie were glad to set up to shred in one of the many bike and surf shops on the boardwalk.
Crowds gathered while the girls set up their equipment, and even more gathered when they started tuning their gear. The rain refused to give anyone a break, but the onlookers seemed to not mind at all.
In this one-take live performance, Deap Vally absolutely kills it. The song they choose was “Smile More”, a song about not giving a damn about what or how society or anyone else thinks you should be doing with your life.
