Whether or not you’ve heard the indie pop band Phases’ single “I’m in Love With My Life”, you’ve definitely heard them before: Lead singer Z Berg also fronts the Like, Jason Boesel has drummed for Rilo Kiley and Bright Eyes and Alex Greenwald led the hallowed L.A. band Phantom Planet.
Phases’ One Shot session took place on an unusually rainy day in Los Angeles; if you listen closely, you can hear it falling onto Yamashiro’s famous Japanese garden courtyard. Instead of filming outside as we’d planned, we moved the shoot just inside, and the band immediately had a feel for its meandering turns and churchlike acoustics.
According to the band, this wasn’t the first time they’d ever been in the restaurant, but it sure as hell was the first time they’d ever played in it. The result is this stunningly fresh performance.
