Early in 1988, another Canadian had more than taken Carrie's place. When Kimberley Conrad, the reigning Miss January, revisited the Mansion to shoot a special pictorial with photographer Helmut Newton, Hef liked what he saw. The more they dated, the more he liked it. By July, the world's most famous swinging single had actually proposed. The following July, they were married next to the Wishing Well on the Mansion grounds where he had popped the question. The wedding rated a People magazine cover with the headline: "HOLY MATRIMONY!.... Next week: Hell freezes over." He referred to her publicly as his Playmate for a Lifetime, and privately as Kimberella.
Not surprisingly, to those who know Hef, among the wedding guests were former girlfriends Barbi Benton, Sondra Theodore and Shannon Tweed. That's the truly remarkable thing about Hugh Hefner, Sex Symbol: He's on good terms with his many exes, all of whom have gone on to other relationships.
After nearly nine years of marriage, Kimberley moved out and now resides with their two boys in an adjacent mansion. He and Kimberley couldn't be happy living together, Hef now says, but avows: "I'm still in love with the girl next door."
