Between Donna's departure in 1964 and the arrival on Hef's radar of Barbi Benton in 1968, the lady sharing Hef's lounge-chair-built-for-two at Mansion movie nights -- as well as his legendary round bed and his table at the many gala Playboy Club openings that marked the era -- was the quiet, unassuming Mary Warren. "One of the sweetest, most devoted women I've ever known," says Hef, who expresses his regret that, of all his Special Ladies, she's the only one with whom he has completely lost touch.
Cynthia Maddox also remembers Mary -- and several others of Hef's sweethearts. "Hef always had a feeling for nice girls," she says. "Mary Warren was lovely, and Barbi, too. They were Betty Coed types. Of course, along the way he had a few wild women, as a reality check."
