Singer, actress, and model Zendaya was born September 1, 1996 in Oakland, California, into a theatrical family. Her mother was house manager of the California Shakespeare Theater, and Zendaya spent much of her childhood at local theater productions.
She also began modeling young, doing work for Macy’s, Mervyns, and Old Navy. Zendaya attended the Oakland School for the Arts, studied at the American Conservatory Theater, and danced with an Oakland hip-hop dance troupe. “[Oakland] is a very inspiring place,” Zendaya told Yahoo. “It has a bad reputation, but honestly, a lot of creative people come out of there.”
In 2010, Zendaya took on the role of Rocky Blue on the Disney show Shake It Up. The following year, she released her debut single, “Swag It Out.” Both her music and her acting found Zendaya success. She went on to appear in Disney original movies Pixie Hollow Games and Frenemies.
As Shake It Up ended in 2013, Zendaya released her debut, self-titled album, including hit single “Replay.” The same year, she appeared on TV’s Dancing with the Stars, becoming the youngest person on the show, and released an advice book for tweens, “Between U and Me.”
Zendaya has stuck with Disney, first starring in the 2014 Disney Channel movie Zapped, and then both starring in and co-producing the channel’s spy series K.C. Undercover, starting in 2015
“I can say what I want and be assertive,” Zendaya told Yahoo. “I can have a really, really strong voice and presence on my own show and be listened to. That’s the coolest part. I have more control; I have more freedom to make [K.C. Undercover] something that I’m proud of.”
Zendaya lives in Los Angeles with her family and a Giant Schnauzer named Midnight. Her name means “to give thanks” in Shona, a Bantu language native to the Shona people of Zimbabwe.
