About Zoe Saldana

Actress Zoe Saldana was born July 19, 1978 in Passaic, New Jersey, to a Puerto Rican mother and Dominican father. Zoe grew up in Queens until her father died when she was nine. Her mother then moved Zoe and her two sisters to the Dominican Republic to live with their grandparents. “It takes a lot of courage to start over, especially when you’re a kid,” Zoe told Women’s Health.

Zoe studied dance in the Dominican Republic and returned to New York with her family as a teen. Once there, she joined Faces, a teen theater group, as well as the New York Youth Theater. Her stage performances led to discovery by a talent agent.

In 1999 she made an appearance on TV’s Law & Order, and the following year made her first movie, Center Stage. The movie allowed her to show off both her dance and acting skills. More film roles followed, including Get Over It!, Crossroads, Snipes, and Drumline. In 2003 she appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl as Anamaria, a former love interest of Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow. In 2004 she was in The Terminal with Tom Hanks. “I became an actress to be in great movies, to work with amazing filmmakers,” Zoe told People.

Zoe returned to the small screen with appearances on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and ABC’s Six Degrees. She also starred opposite Ashton Kutcher in the big-screen comedy Guess Who and the thriller Vantage Point. In 2009 she broke out with two hugely successful roles: Communications Officer Uhura in J.J. Abram’s Star Trek and alien warrior Neytiri in James Cameron’s Avatar. More film roles followed including Death at a Funeral, Burning Palms, Star Trek Into Darkness and Out of the Furnace. In 2014 she found herself in another box-office hit, playing Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy.

In addition to her acting, Zoe models for Calvin Klein lingerie, Avon, and Gap and has appeared on the covers of Elle, Vanity Fair, Essence, and InStyle.

Zoe married Italian artist Marco Perego in 2013, and the couple welcomed twin boys in 2014. She had previously dated Keith Britton and Bradley Cooper.
