Playboy made its foray into NFTs in May 2021 with our first drop on Nifty Gateway, a collaboration with the artist Slimesunday. The collection, titled “Liquid Summer,” leveraged incredible original imagery and text from the Playboy Archives, including our April 1973 cover featuring Lena Sjööblom, also known as the “First Lady of the Internet.” The combination of Playboy heritage, Slimesunday’s inimitable imagination, and the explosive world of NFTs, created the perfect opportunity to build on Playboy’s nearly 70-year history of championing artists and pushing the boundaries of creative expression.

That was just the beginning. In June, we partnered with Nifty again to release a collaboration with artist Shantell Martin, a series of Augmented Reality interpretations of David Bowie’s 1976 Playboy Interview in support of Pride month. In July, we participated alongside major auction houses, art galleries and marketplaces in Decentraland’s second annual virtual art fair with our Miami Beach Art Collection, which featured a series of original animated NFTs inspired by Playboy’s deep ties to Miami Beach. The collection was minted for sale on SuperRare, and also featured Playboy’s genesis heritage NFT – a digitized version of a photograph of a Playboy Bunny pictured water-skiing outside of the Miami Playboy Club in 1970.

This year, we also presented a digital art gallery at the Bitcoin Conference in Miami, began accepting Bitcoin on Playboy.com, and hosted some amazing virtual parties in the Playboy Art Gallery in Decentraland with world-renowned DJs like 3BLAU and Vérité. Going forward, we expect to continue to release NFT projects in collaboration with artists who are moving culture forward and redefining the way we tell stories today.

We couldn’t be more inspired about the opportunities ahead for artists and digital communities in the world of NFTs, blockchain technology and the creator economy. As our physical and digital worlds increasingly converge, what has become crystal clear in the world of NFTs, and the broader creator economy, is that meaningful impact – and true differentiation – lies at the intersection of content and community. As a brand that was built at that exact intersection, we can’t wait to see how the road of crypto and NFTs leads us into the next era of internet, technology, and innovation.
