It’s Major season in golf, which means Nelly Korda is usually in contention. That was true once again at the US Women’s Open. She had to work for it, but she was able to fend off a tight group of contenders for her second Major win in 2026. She previously won the 2026 Chevron Championship, her second title at that event.
Nelly Korda grinds out close win at US Open
Nelly Korda watched her final putt just barely get over the lip of the cup to fall in, cementing her second Major win this year. The putt threatened to lip out and throw the US Women’s Open into chaos, but it didn’t. Korda remains in the throes of one of the best seasons in golf in recent memory.
Had she missed, it would’ve forced a three-way playoff for the win. As it stands, that putt kept her at a two-under showing on the final 18, which was enough to snag her fourth win of the year. She has more wins (four) than second-place showings (three) in 2026, proving her dominance as the best women’s golfer in the entire world.
At times, it looked like Korda was fading on the back nine, and she let competitors hang around and even threaten to win. “I didn’t feel my best on the back nine,” the golfer said. “I had a lot of emotions swirling in my stomach, it’s a dream come true. I’ve dreamt about this moment since I was a little girl.”
All week long, Korda had to work for it. “(It) was definitely a grind,” Korda said. “I don’t even feel like I had my B game. I was just grinding out there, and that’s what I guess major championships are all about, right? It doesn’t matter if you have your B or C game. You have to be there mentally.” She was, and it paid off with a clutch, tight win.
Charley Hull nearly completes epic comeback
Nelly Korda won, but she was quite close to letting Charley Hull complete an incredible comeback. Had Korda missed that final putt, she would’ve had to go to a playoff with Hull and Gaby Lopez. Hull’s appearance in that group may be surprising after an inauspicious start.
Hull was three over after two rounds, just barely making the cut. That still left her only three shots back of the lead in a hotly contested Major, though. And after shooting 10 under in the final two rounds, she was back in the thick of it.
However, a bogey on the 14th brought her back to a tie with Korda, Lopez, and two other challengers. They remained there, matching each other, until Korda went for a birdie and the win on the 18th hole, just edging out Lopez and Hull.
“It was quite windy and I hit the ball fantastic, so fair play to Nelly Korda for back-to-back wins,” Hull said. “But I just love playing in the majors. I pretty much only get up for the major. It’s really weird, I just love playing in majors. Like if it’s a normal week-to-week, I struggle sometimes getting the motivation, but when it comes to major week, I just love it.”
