Lexee smith has spent years building the performances that bring other people fame. If you watched Kim Kardashian crawl around on the floor in her "Santa Baby" video or saw Addison Rae casually pop into the splits on Instagram, you're already familiar with Smith's oeuvre. When she's on set with artists such as Billie Eilish and FKA Twigs, intimacy blurs authorship. As a movement director and
creative consultant, she's had artists ask to swap outfits with her, borrow a gesture she improvised, and absorb something ineffable about her physical vocabulary. At one time, that might have felt like theft. Now she sees it as transmission. "If my spirit wants to be seen through another vessel," she says, "that's still me existing."
When she FaceTimes me, the 25-year-old is dressed for bed in a pink and white bathrobe, but her red lipstick is pressed into a perfect bow. She shifts her phone as she speaks, her heart-shaped face drifting in and out of frame like she's directing her own close-up. She lifts her arm to push hair from her eyes, and I notice faint bruises circling her wrist, marks left by the shibari rope she was bound in for her Playboy photo shoot.
