Nineteen-year-old Modern Family actress Ariel Winter resembles a vintage Hollywood vixen on the cover of the fall issue of LaPalme magazine. Derek Warburton, celebrity stylist and co-owner of LaPalme, served as creative director on the retro-styled shoot, which was inspired by 1950s pinup icon Bettie Page. To really get the point across in the images, shot by Mike Rosenthal, Winter even sports Bettie Page’s classic blunt bangs.

For the shoot, the actress posed regally in and around the Hollywood Castle, a Hollywood Hills estate designed to resemble – you guessed it – a British castle. Winter appears to feel right at home in the luxurious surroundings, but she wasn’t always as self-assured as she looks in these pics.

Winter struggled with her body image as she grew up in the public eye, and now that she feels good about herself, she regularly calls out the critics who body shame her for wearing things like shorts and crop tops in public. She revisits the topic in LaPalme, saying, “The thing we all have to remember is the only person you have to please is yourself. If you feel good in an outfit, and you feel good with the way you look, then that is all that matters and you should rock it and feel happy about it.“

She also told the magazine, “I hate reading stories about myself and that’s why I don’t.” Instead, she makes the conscious choice to focus on what makes her happy. Peek behind the scenes of the photoshoot, and watch Winter model several elegant (and cleavage-baring) gowns in this US Weekly video:
