Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) has already been established as a scary dude by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He’s got the wicked cross-guarded lightsaber, Force abilities strong enough to stop a blaster bolt in midair and the military might of the First Order at his back. For Star Wars: The Last Jedi, he’s getting something else that’ll make even more formidable: A new starfighter.
The Star Wars Show first revealed the details of the new vessel, known as the TIE Silencer, on YouTube Wednesday just as San Diego Comic-Con began its previews. Check it out:
As you can see, the ship has many elements of the classic TIE Fighter design, including a spider web-esque cockpit window and a wing design that’s particularly reminiscent of the TIE Interceptors that first appeared in Return of the Jedi. In essence, it’s a hybrid of the Interceptors – so named for their extraordinary speed – and Darth Vader’s own TIE Advanced vessel from A New Hope. As Kylo Ren has already established himself as the ultimate Darth Vader Fanboy, that’s not surprising.
What is surprising is that Kylo Ren will apparently be piloting a starfighter around in the next film, something he never even really hinted at doing in The Force Awakens. Ren’s been established as a formidable lightsaber duellist and Force user but as far as transportation he preferred to be shuttled around by his troops. However, the idea that he’d take to flying easily is not a big leap. Force users have heightened reflexes that make them good pilots. And, after all, he’s a Skywalker and a Solo.
It’ll be interesting to see exactly where and when Kylo Ren breaks out the TIE Advanced for a combat run, particularly if he’s doing it opposite Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron. It is San Diego Comic-Con week, though, so it’s very possible some new footage will fill us in very soon.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives December 15.
