The battle to create the ultimate luxury SUV is an ongoing one. While high-end automakers like Rolls Royce and Lamborghini are new to the arena, the veterans are Range Rover and Mercedes-Benz. Much like the Range Rover, Mercedes’ G series SUVs, a.k.a. the G-Wagens, have undergone a substantial evolution over the years. But the latest iteration just might be the most luxe from Mercedes, or anyone else for that matter.
The Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet was just revealed ahead of the Geneva Auto Show, and it is an over-the-top combination of a badass 4-wheeler and a nose-in-the-air luxury car. The badassness comes courtesy of a V12, yes a V12, that puts out 630 horsepower and 738 ft-lb of torque. Inside is where the Maybach name really comes into play. The rear seats are covered by a soft-top roof that can be lowered quickly and easily so if passengers are being chauffeured about they can enjoy the open air while the plebeians up front sit under a hard top. Not that it isn’t pleasurable to drive the G 650. There is quilted leather throughout the vehicle, and even the cup holders are fancy, capable of heating or cooling beverages placed inside.
Only 99 of the G 650 Landaulets will be produced. While pricing information was not released, you can expect it to be as over-the-top as the styling of the vehicle. Unfortunately, the vehicle won’t be available in the United States. But it’s a good bet that if you can afford this top-of-the-line G-Wagen, you’ve got another international locale.
