About Lea Michele
Lea Michele was raised by a mom who was a nurse and a father who was a delicatessen owner. Maybe that’s why this young actress, singer, and author is so practical. After appearing on Broadway for her first time at age 20, she starred on the six-year-long TV smash hit High School Musical not long after.
She’s since been ranked on best-dressed and most-desirable lists and served as a spokesmodel for L’Oreal Paris and Candie’s footwear. She’s won several People’s Choice and Teen Choice awards, and the cast of Glee received a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album. Just like on the show, she has singing chops, too, and her first solo pop/rock album, “Louder,” released in 2014 to positive reviews.
But instead of flaunting, she’s all about sharing her wisdom—and passion for individuality—with fans. She denies any “prima donna” rumors. “I’m a very outspoken person,” she told Marie Claire. “I can assure you that [the diva rumors] aren’t real. It’s super-frustrating sometimes, and I used to fight back, but now I feel like, you can think what you want about me—that’s okay.”
“Scheduling workouts way in advance really helps me stick to them,” and “Swap your desk chair for a stability ball,” are among the inspirational mantras on the “Learn” page of her website. It’s all marked with #brunetteambition, a reference to the title of Lea Michele’s 2014 book (part memoir, part style guide, part self-help), “a practical and inspirational guide to harnessing tenacity and passion … about living the fullest life, no matter what obstacles life puts in your way,” according to her website for the book.
There is one thing she didn’t retain from her parents, though: her last name. “Sarfati” made her the butt of jokes in school, so when she had the chance to take a stage name, she dropped it. “When I was little and I went on my first audition, they were like, ‘And may we have your name?’ And I was like, ‘Lea Michele,’” she explained on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. “And I’ve been Lea Michele ever since.”
Lea Michele’s dating history is dotted with actors of varying degrees of celebrity—Landon Beard, Theo Stockman, and Glee co-star Cory Monteith, who famously died of a drug and alcohol overdose while the two were dating. She’s currently dating model and lifestyle coach Matthew Paetz, whom she met while filming one of her music videos.
Gay rights and animal rights issues are important to Lea Michele, who earned a Humanitarian Award from PETA in 2010.
