Painter Skolnick, asked in 1969 to illustrate a sex manual, thought photography better suited to the task. The resulting images of bodies intertwined convey a raw elemental power reminiscent of Rodin's sculpture. Skolnick cap­tures fleeting moments of sen­sual foreplay between couples but no penetration. Seen today these images seem like the cap­stone to the decade of free love, a last celebratory gasp of the erotic before the world turned hard-core. VYV —Matt Steigbigel
