Season 23 for LeBron James just came to an end. Despite a spirited effort, the Los Angeles Lakers were swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder. Naturally, with any athlete at his age, it’s worth wondering if this is the last we’ve seen of James.
There are two schools of thought. The first is that James, as one of the greatest players to ever even touch a basketball, would want and deserve a farewell tour. The second is that he might just ride off into the sunset and call it. Each one is plausible, and James didn’t reveal very much after the series loss.
LeBron James won’t say much on retirement
By this stage of any other NBA player’s career, they’d be retired or struggling and should retire. That’s not the case with LeBron James. He’s still capable of playing at a high level. He won a playoff series largely without his two best teammates.
“I think you guys asked me about , and I’ve answered questions. I don’t think I’ve come out and been like, ‘Oh, retirement is coming,'” James said after the loss to the Thunder. “With my future, I don’t know, honestly. It’s, obviously it’s still fresh from, obviously losing . And I don’t know. I don’t know what the future holds for me.”
James missed a shot with 20 seconds left that would’ve put the Lakers up by one point. He otherwise had 24 points and 12 rebounds in 40 minutes.”I left everything I could on the floor,” he added. “I can leave the floor saying, ‘S**t, even though I hate losing obviously, I was locked in on what we needed to do.”
James said he understands that the Lakers fell short of their goal, but he refuses to view his season as a failure. It began with plantar fasciitis and ended with a sweep, but everything in between was pretty stellar for a 41-year-old player.
Decision time
LeBron James has a lot of decisions to make. First and foremost, he must decide whether or not he wants to continue playing. Then, he has to decide if he’ll re-sign with the Lakers or sign elsewhere. He’d be a hot commodity on the free agent market.
“I think for me it’s about the process,” James said. “If I can commit to still being in love with the process of showing up to the arena 5½ hours before a game to start preparing for a game, giving everything I got, diving for loose balls, and doing everything that you know that it takes to go out and play.”
He continued, “Showing up to practices, 11 o’clock practice, I’m there at 8 o’clock preparing my body, preparing my mind, preparing to practice, to put the work in. So I think for me, I’ve always been in love with the process … so I think that would be a big factor.”
This is the first time since joining the Lakers eight seasons ago that James doesn’t have even a player option to opt into. He will be an unrestricted free agent for the first time since he came to Los Angeles if he decides not to retire.
