Golf’s second Major tournament is here, but don’t tell Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau, or Jon Rahm that. The PGA Championship hasn’t been kind to those three in particular, but all in various ways. At the conclusion of the first round, neither of the three potential winners and early favorites is at the top. Two of them aren’t even in contention.

There was a group of golfers, including Scottie Scheffler, tied for first. In fact, it was the most tied for first after one round at the PGA Championship since 1969, yet McIlroy, DeChambeau, and Rahm were not among them, which would have been a surprising thing to say before the round began.

Rory McIlroy collapses to close PGA Championship opener

Rory McIlroy kind of dominated the field at the Masters en route to his second straight green jacket a month ago. That golfer was nowhere to be found on Thursday at the PGA Championship. He was in solid shape before melting down with four consecutive bogeys to close it at +4. He was outside the top 100.

This golf course rewards those who drive well, allowing them to get closer and give themselves more attempts on the more difficult parts of the 18 holes. McIlroy hasn’t had his driver yet, and it cost him dearly in the first round.

“I’m just not driving the ball well enough. It’s been a problem all year for the most part,” McIlroy said. “I miss it right, and then I want to try to correct it. And then I’ll overdo it, and I’ll miss it left. It’s a little bit of back-and-forth that way. So that’s pretty frustrating, especially when I pride myself on driving the ball well.”

On the other hand, Bryson DeChambeau didn’t really have anything. His day can be summarized by a wayward birdie putt that rolled as far away as one can imagine, putting him in a bad spot. He ended six over, well out of contention. Those two will have to fight just to make the cut.

Jon Rahm apologizes for fan incident

Jon Rahm also had a rough day, but his might be a little worse in one way. He shot under par for the day, so he did much better than his counterparts. However, he still had some struggles, and his reaction to one in particular ended poorly.

He was frustrated with himself, so he took another swing. His approach shot was not as good as he’d hoped, and he ended up sending a divot into the spectators. The divot ended up hitting a volunteer in the area.

“I got a flyer on my second shot that went long,” Rahm said. “It’s not a good spot. Just out of frustration, I tried to make an air swing, just over the grass, and I wasn’t looking. took a divot, and unfortunately, I hit a volunteer.”

“I couldn’t feel any worse,” he added. “That’s why I was there apologizing. I need to somehow track him down to give him a present because that’s inexcusable and for something that could be completely avoidable. Whether it was my intention or not, it was just not good.” Rahm is not likely to face any repercussions for his action.
