At halftime, the San Antonio Spurs looked destined to even the series with the New York Knicks. By the time the game ended, it looked as if the Spurs were dead in the water. New York has a 3-1 series lead, which is almost insurmountable. A 29-point second-half deficit was apparently nothing to this team, which consistently comes up with ways to erase even the most staggering of deficits.
Knicks pull off historic comeback to move to a win away
The Knicks need to win just one of the remaining three (if necessary) games in the NBA Finals. That alone is astonishing to think, considering how great the Spurs were and how favored they were coming into the Finals. It’s even more absurd to think when you consider that the Spurs were up by almost 30 in the second half of Game 4.
It seemed like a foregone conclusion that the Spurs’ talent would show back up and tie this series, reverting home court back to San Antonio in what would be a best-of-three series. Then, the comeback kings returned in historic fashion. The previous record was 24 points, and the Knicks now hold the record and are one win away from NBA glory.
The victory hinged on several things, including OG Anunoby’s brilliant tip-in with 1.2 seconds left after a Jalen Brunson miss. But before that, Anunoby saved the game with an unbelievably clutch block of De’Aaron Fox, who made one of the worst decisions in the history of basketball.
The veteran guard poked a loose rebound down to his end of the court, sprinting past Anunoby to catch it. With mere seconds remaining, Fox should’ve dribbled it out and gotten fouled to give himself two free throws for a three-point lead. Instead, he went for a layup, got blocked, and the Knicks set up the game-winning play.
OG Anunoby reacts to historic game
Aside from those two ridiculously clutch plays, OG Anunoby made the case for Finals MVP with a brilliant performance otherwise. He had 33 points, second in the game, on an absurd 10/15 shooting line. He made seven three-pointers. He had one fewer make in the second half than the entire Spurs roster.
“We know it’s a game of runs,” said Anunoby. “We’re a resilient group. We’ve been through a lot. We’ve come back plenty of times when we’re behind. Just staying with it, weathering the storm, not being too down or angry or frustrated. Just staying with it, cut down to 18, cut it down to six, push it through. It’s a 48-minute game, just play ’til the end.”
Anunoby is scoring 23.8 points per game on 58% shooting in the four games thus far. With Jalen Brunson shooting poorly and Karl-Anthony Towns disappearing in the fourth quarter in three of the four games, Anunoby could well win the Finals MVP.
Despite the loss, which is historic and crushing and puts the Spurs on the literal brink of a stunning series loss, they’re not terribly worried. “What’s going through my mind right now?” Victor Wembanyama said. “I think it’s going to go one of two ways: a bad one and a good one. The bad one would be giving up. The good one would be getting stronger through this, getting more together. I know this is what we’re going to do.”
