Mike Evans is turning a new leaf in his NFL career as he leaves the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to sign with the SF 49ers.

Sports March 16, 2026

It has been an extremely productive career for Mike Evans, who will be entering his 14th season in the NFL. The future Hall-of-Fame WR has spent all 13 seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and it wasn’t an easy decision, but he’ll be moving on from the only NFL franchise he has ever known.

Now, Evans will be taking his talents out West to join the San Francisco 49ers after signing a three-year, $42.4 million contract that could reach up to $60.4 million if certain incentives are hit.

Evans, who is eyeing at least one more realistic shot at a Super Bowl title, decided that San Francisco was the perfect destination, stating: “Even with all the injuries last year…I feel like they were once piece away,” he said. “And I think that I am that piece. I look forward to coming here and proving that.”

A lot of wild claims have been made about the area surrounding Levi’s Stadium, and how numerous injuries have been caused by electromagnetic fields (EMFs) from a nearby electrical substation weakening the soft tissue on players. It should be noted that nothing is for certain, but Evans (who is coming off an injury-riddled season) was seemingly unaffected by these worries.

There are plenty of aspects to look into with Evans signing in San Fran, so let’s dive into what life will be like for him by the Bay.

Mike Evans’ career numbers with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Evans is going from one bay to another after accumulating 866 catches for 13,052 yards and 108 touchdowns over 13 seasons. Last season, Evans was reduced to only eight games (lowest of his career), making it the only time he failed to produce a 1,000-yard season.

Now that it’s all said and done for Evans in Tampa, a lot of people are already calling him the best player in Buccaneers history – and it’s hard to argue. No matter who was under center in Tampa, Evans was ready to go each and every week.

Perhaps, Evans’ best all-around season came in 2023, when he played all 17 games and put 79 catches for 1,255 and 13 touchdowns. In 2018, Evans set his career high in yards (1,524), while 2021 was his best touchdown (14) output.

At the of the day, Evans will go down as one of the best to ever line up at the WR position.

Details of Mike Evans’ contract with the San Francisco 49ers

Moving on to greener pastures, Evans inked the three-year, $42.4 million (up to $60.4 million with incentives) contract that will likely close out his playing days. The money was something to behold, but it wasn’t everything.

“I love money like everybody else, but the money was not the biggest factor for me,” Evans said. “Like I said, it was just football and something that I can be excited about. I’m super excited. I feel like it’s given me a second wind in my career. And that’s why I chose to come here.”

There is a Tampa connection there in San Fran already with general manager John Lynch, who is one of the best defensive players in the team’s history. Although their careers never overlapped, the two still have a level of comfortability because of their connection to Tampa.

However, Evans said that 49ers TE George Kittle was a huge influence, claiming: “I knew a lot of them from Pro Bowls and just seeing them around the league after games and things like that,” Evans said. “But George was the biggest salesman. George sold it big-time. And he’s a big reason why I’m here, just because the type of player and teammate that he is.”

How will Mike Evans fit with the 49ers?

The 49ers are losing WRs Brandon Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings this season, while Kittle will be sidelined for most (if not all) of the 2026 season with an injury, so Evans will be asked to step in and produce immediately.

QB Brock Purdy gets yet another weapon to play with on this strategic offense, and is anyone as fired up as I am about seeing Evans run-blocking for Christian McCaffrey? Once Kittle returns, watch out, folks!

San Francisco has advanced to at least the Divisional Round in four of the last five seasons, so this is clearly a move to put a win-now team over the top. With the rival Los Angeles Rams retooling at the CB position, those NFC West games are going to be a hell of a lot more intriguing.

But, of course, it is all going to come down to Evans’ health as he is certainly on the back-nine of his career.
