Shohei Ohtani already has arguably the best hitting performance ever. Now, the Los Angeles Dodgers star might have the best game ever. Finally hitting and pitching again, Ohtani has struggled at the plate some this year. His pitching has been excellent, and on Wednesday night, the two-way star had it all working.

The Dodgers were facing the lowly Colorado Rockies, but they needed every bit of dominance from the superstar to emerge with a three-run win. It was their fifth consecutive victory as the World Series favorites continue to fight injuries and shake off early-season rust. Ohtani has done a lot to keep them afloat, especially on the mound. On Wednesday, he did it all.

Shohei Ohtani might’ve just had the greatest baseball game ever

Hitting a leadoff home run to set the tone of a game usually leads to a really good hitting performance. On Wednesday, Ohtani’s leadoff home run didn’t lead to more results after, but going 1/4 with a home run to start things off is still a very solid outing. If that was someone’s stat-line every day, they’d be more than thrilled.

Pitching six no-hit innings is really impressive, too. Very few MLB pitchers have done that this year. Just recently, Tatsuya Imai went six no-hit innings as part of a combined no-hitter, the first no-hitter since 2024 in the MLB. Just getting to that point without having allowed a hit is incredibly rare.

Ohtani’s bullpen couldn’t keep up the same energy as the Houston Astros did, but still. Going six no-hit innings with one unearned run, four walks, and seven strikeouts is highly impressive. Combine that with a win for the Dodgers and the leadoff home run, and you’ve got one of the best overall games ever.

It doesn’t beat the offensive masterpiece that Ohtani had in September 2024. He established the 50/50 club that day with a stat line of this: 6/6 with three homers, two steals, two doubles, and 10 RBI. Still, six no-hit innings and a home run is unbelievable.

Not satisfied

Despite the six no-hit innings, Shohei Ohtani is not satisfied with his performance on the mound. He was displeased with allowing even an unearned run and several walks. Even near-perfection isn’t good enough for the two-way superstar.

“Of course you want to avoid the hits, but the result of that was a lot of walks today,” Ohtani said, speaking through an interpreter. “That’s something that I just don’t really want to do.” Ohtani threw a season low 56.6% of his pitches for strikes.

On offense, Ohtani isn’t satisfied with his outing, either. He has struggled, by his standards, this season at the plate. His 147 wRC+ would be the lowest mark since 2022 and the third-lowest (excluding 2020) since he debuted. A .265 batting average and .482 slugging percentage are both below his career averages, too.

“I know I say the same thing a lot, but it’s just the feel,” Ohtani said of his performance. “When something’s off offensively, defensively, I could tell, and I just really couldn’t find it.” Ohtani is, however, striking out a career-low 22% of the time.
