An ad for a Time-Life book, The Birds, reminded us of the odd but highly imaginative collective nouns still applied to certain avian groups—a sord of mallards, a covert of coots, a murmuration of starlings, an exaltation of larks. We then considered the unlimited number of human types crying for collective appellations heretofore denied them and hastened to set matters aright.
