Cabaret is a taut, pulsating musical, despite the fact that it shortchanges its heroine. In Christopher Isherwood's original Berlin Stories (and John van Druten's play I Am a Camera), soulless Sally Bowles was the central symbol of decaying Berlin in the late Twenties and early Thirties.
