The Sea Gull as cinema is a mixed bag--brilliant in parts but rather stagy and lethargic on the whole. Produced and directed by Sidney Lumet, the film was made in Sweden from an eloquent translation by Moura Budberg, with English, French and American actors impersonating Chekhov's turn-of-the-century Russians.
