The Me Nobody Knows started out as a book by Stephen M. Joseph, inspired by his days as a ghetto schoolteacher in New York City. It was a paste pot of observations, anecdotes, fantasies, daydreams and scraps of poetry, written by street kids, some of them as young as seven. The naïveté and the honesty of the writings were its charm. Then someone had the idea--in the program, Herb Schapiro is credited with "original idea"--to make a rock musical out of the book.
