Most of us manage to struggle along with one day of Christmas per year. It's a beautiful time and, with any luck, some part of it--maybe even a mechanical Muzak carol piped into an elevator-- takes us briefly back to when ribboned bicycles gleamed beneath tinseled trees and there was nothing to do but throw snowballs and eat wonderful once-a-year food, because school was out for the holidays.
