To get the quibbles out of the way first: Why does every singer lately try a Randy Newman song? Linda Ronstadt does it, too, on Don't Cry Now (Asylum) with the classic Sail Away, but her voice is just too pure and straight for the intricate pathways of Newman satire. And it is hard to understand why she picked Neil Young's I Believe in You and gave it a too-pretty, overblown arrangement with strings.
