For a really enjoyable English hardrock album, try Nightingales and Bombers (Bronze), by Manfred Mann and his Earth Band. The material--including Bruce Springsteen's Spirit in the Night, Joan Armatrading's Visionary Mountains and Dylan's Quit Your Low Down Ways--is plenty tough and the band puts it all across with electric sounds that are always in harness, never in the driver's seat.
