In the Forties and Fifties, Savoy, a record label of modest pretensions, was turning out some of the best jazz recordings around. The commercial viability of jazz being what it is, by the Sixties the label had moved on to what it considered long-greener pastures and consigned its masters to the vaults or wherever vinyl white elephants go to die.
