We are tearing through the rainy murk of an equatorial African night, six of us stuffed into a steamy Fiat safari wagon. The vehicle's straining suspension slams again and again onto the slick, rutted road, jarring whole sections of our bodies loose from their intended positions. A team of aggressively nonchalant Italian mechanics fills the front seat, two shouting instructions at the third, who is driving and who cannot possibly see ten yards beyond the hood.
