It started out as an experiment: Could I program my home computer to make up jokes? Since it has the ability to choose numbers at random, I decided to let my TRS-80 sort through a stack of nouns, verbs and other parts of speech to put together sentences and phrases of its own invention. One thing I learned was that it can turn out 3000 one-liners per hour.
