Before Sophie's Choice (Universal), Meryl Streep seemed to me, at best, an accomplished but somewhat asexual star, too cool for my taste. All previous doubts are banished by her scintillating, bravura performance as the heroine of William Styron's best seller. Adapted for the screen by Alan J. Pakula, who also doubles as director and coproducer, Sophie's Choice is emphatically a breakthrough role for Streep. If they had written parts like this for Garbo, she might still be acting.
