In the Rarefied art of horror films, elegance is not enough. The Hunger (MGM/UA) is directed by Tony Scott (whose brother Ridley directed Alien), with Catherine Deneuve, David Bowie and Susan Sarandon to add their Beautiful People auras to an updated vampire yarn. That's about all it amounts to, alas, after a fast, fashionable start set to punk music, with everything smashingly photographed by Stephen Goldblatt.
