David Ritz began work on Divided Soul: The Life of Marvin Gaye (McGraw-Hill) several years before the sweet-voiced Motown star was shot by his father in April 1984. He was therefore able to lace together Gaye's own points of view, as collected in a series of interviews, with the remembrances of most of those who knew him well (a glaring exception: Motown founder Berry Gordy).
