When the Ayatollah Khomeini decided that the book The Satanic Verses, by Salman Rushdie, was offensive to Islamic values, he called for the author's murder. In the U.S., responses ranged from First Amendment champions' calling for sanctions against Iran to a joke hotline's noting that Rushdie should write a sequel called Buddha, You Fat Fuck.
