Both the opening and the closing scene of Postcards from the Edge (Columbia) feature Gene Hackman, in his customary top form, as a movie director in mid-movie. The rest of it is a mother--daughter showbiz saga that makes Mommie Dearest look trivial. If anything, an improvement on the book by Carrie Fisher, who also wrote the trenchant, witty screenplay, the movie isn't exactly about Fisher and her mother, Debbie Reynolds (Dad is singer Eddie Fisher, of course).
