Dwight Childs' pickup truck came equipped with driver-side and passenger-side air bags. On May 16, 1998 he ran a red light and crashed into another vehicle. His two-month-old son was on the seat next to him, belted into a rear-facing child carrier and, as a local reporter described it, "in the bags' line of fire."
